Why does Merkel wear this particular respirator and where does it come from?

Angela Merkel has been appearing in public with a very specific respirator mask for weeks. She wears the imprint "KN95". Why does the German Chancellor wear just this mask and no other? And where does this mask come from?

Customers of FaireSoftware Limited have known this model for months, see here. KN95 is a Chinese standard: The mask filters at least 95 percent of all viruses and bacteria from the air we breathe. Nevertheless, the wearer can breathe very well due to the special, high-quality fleece of the mask - even after hours of conferences. The Chinese standard KN95 corresponds to the European standard FFP2.

Corona is mainly transmitted by droplet infection. We humans live in a symbiosis with viruses and bacteria. As soon as we breathe out, we release them into our environment via droplets. Some of these droplets, the so-called aerosols, are tiny and invisible to us. In closed rooms the aerosols and our viruses and bacteria remain trapped in them for up to three hours in the air. Anyone who goes into the immediate vicinity of another person or moves through a closed room in which other people are travelling with him or her, absorbs their viruses (including possibly corona viruses) and bacteria via the air they breathe - if they do not protect themselves.

The simplest and most effective way to avoid becoming infected via droplets is to avoid being close to other people (the guideline value for "close" is 1.5 to 2 metres) and to avoid being in a closed room with other people.

Unfortunately, this is not always possible. At some point the refrigerator is empty. Then you have to go to the supermarket to do your shopping. Or you have to go to the EU conference in Brussels. And there you are exposed to the viruses and bacteria in the aerosols of your fellow human beings. The closer you get to them, the higher the concentration.

The KN95 | FFP2 respirator helps against this. Unlike a conventional, aerosol-permeable fabric mouth and nose cover, the KN95 | FFP2 mask, made from a special fleece, protects in both directions: It drastically reduces the number of droplets you emit to your surroundings and filters droplets from the air you breathe in.

Angela Merkel's medical advisors seem to know this too.
