Security updates for Office 2013 until April 2023

Microsoft Office Updates

Microsoft has announced that it will no longer provide new security updates for Office 2013 after 11 April 2023. This is what Bleepingcomputer reports. The US company advises switching to Office 365 at a price of EUR 61.20 to EUR 223.20 per year, depending on the version. By contrast, anyone who buys a hardware-bound version of, for example, Office 2019 Home & Business for EUR 59.90 today will pay only EUR 0.50 per month for 10 years of use. And they are guaranteed security updates until at least 2029.

First of all, it is important for every user to have a current operating system with ongoing security updates. Anyone who uses an operating system that does not receive security updates must reckon with the fact that their computer, laptop or tablet can be hijacked by cyber criminals even if they do nothing wrong themselves and, for example, completely refrain from opening unknown files. A device with an outdated operating system is at risk as soon as it is connected to the internet.

With Office files, on the other hand, always up-to-date updates can create a false sense of security. This is because a current security standard guarantees that you will be shown a warning when opening Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access documents before you carry out operations that could possibly activate malware. But if you ignore the warnings, they can still cause you considerable damage.

Companies cannot refrain from using only software with current security standards. However, private individuals who only work with their own Office documents and do not need to constantly decide how to handle files from external sources can still use Office 2007 or 2010. The ability to open newer Office documents is guaranteed by various free Office Compatibility Packs.

We will continue to offer Office 2013 Home & Business, Access 2013, Visio 2013 Professional and Project 2013 Professional until March 2023. And we continue to believe: it doesn't always have to be the latest, most expensive version.
