Currently, many conspicuously cheap computers and laptops are being offered with Microsoft Windows 10 or 11 installed in S-mode. For some users, such inexpensive devices are ideal. But not for everyone.
S-mode consumes few resources and, similarly to Chrome, Apple iOS and Android, only allows software to be installed via the Microsoft Store. If you only want to use your device to surf the Internet with Edge, receive and send emails and watch videos, you will have no problems with S mode. Windows S reliably prevents your device from being infected with malware, because no malware can be installed in addition to all other programmes outside of what is offered in the Microsoft Store.
But any normal software use is only possible at a very high price via the Microsoft Store, with Microsoft urging a subscription for Office. This quickly outweighs any price advantage of buying a device with Windows S.
To exit S mode, type 'activation' in the Windows search bar at the bottom left. In the search results, call up the activation settings, click on 'S-mode' there and then open the Microsoft Store. There you should be able to download an app that terminates S-mode by clicking on 'Download'.
If the application of this app does not work, only a complete reinstallation will help.
