After October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will quickly become insecure. This is because Microsoft will then stop providing security updates for this operating system, which is currently still used on most computers and laptops worldwide. There are only exceptions for paying business customers until 2028.
You should think about this when buying hardware today and only buy devices with Windows 11 or Linux pre-installed.
Switching from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is usually only possible as a new installation. Upgrades often fail with some kind of error message. So, for newer devices that are compatible with Windows 11: Back up your data. Install and activate Windows 11. Restore data and reinstall and activate your own software. This can take half a day - or longer.
So our tip: don't wait until the last minute to switch to Windows 11, but do it when you have time. For example, at home at the weekend or on public holidays. And at work when there is little to do. That way, you won't be under pressure next year when the expiry date for Windows 11 approaches.
You can upgrade older computers and laptops to Windows 11 using the free Rufus help software and a Windows 11 iso. But you don't have to do this before it's really necessary. We will publish instructions for this in good time next year.
