After 14 October 2025, there will no longer be any normal security updates for Windows 10. Without security updates, the operating system can only be used offline after this date. Criminals exploit vulnerabilities in any operating system whose defences are not constantly updated in order to take over the system as soon as it is connected to the internet.
Hardware weaknesses may prevent you from switching from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Or the unwillingness to use Windows via a Microsoft account, which will sooner or later become mandatory with Windows 11. Microsoft is also imposing a cloud connection on Windows 11 users, which not everyone is in favour of.
Microsoft offers an Esu programme (Extended Security Updates) for Windows 10, which costs 56.60 euros in the first year, then 113.20 euros in 2027 and 226.40 euros in 2028, officially the last year of Windows 10 according to Microsoft. The price therefore doubles from year to year.
But a comparable service is also available free of charge until 2030, at least for private users. The Slovenian software company Acros Security offers 0Patch, which is similar to Microsoft's Esu programme. And 0Patch even runs for two years longer than Microsoft's paid service, i.e. until 2030.
Acros Security is a reliable company. You can download the free version of 0Patch for Windows 10 here:
