Windows updates and the secret of the inetpub folder

Was a new, seemingly empty folder labelled inetpub created on the top level of your C: drive in April 2025? If yes, then everything is fine. If not, you should run a virus scan immediately and then start a Windows update manually. This is because you need the inetpub folder to ensure the security of your operating system and to obtain future updates under Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The inetpub folder is intended to close a very specific Windows security vulnerability. It is labelled CVE-2025-21204 and Microsoft has not yet made public exactly how this works.

However, attackers have the option of preventing the inetpub folder from being created. And this not only keeps the very specific vulnerability CVE-2025-21204 open, but also hinders any further security update on your Windows device. It is therefore worth checking the existence of this folder on the C: drive and reacting immediately if the folder is not present.
