HypTech: Don't subscribe to Microsoft Office!

Microsoft is making tempting subscription offers for Office 365. The first month is free, after that the software costs EUR 3.45 per month when paid annually. That makes EUR 41.40 per year.

However, this sounds cheap only for people who are weak in mental arithmetic.

The full version of Office 2021 Professional Plus, which is bound to one device, currently costs EUR 35.94:

With a used computer, laptop or tablet, we can assume about five years of effective use. For a new device it is ten years. A five-year Office subscription costs at least EUR 207.00 and ten years at least EUR 414.00. Price increases within this period are likely.

The advantage over the hardware-bound licence of being able to move from one device to another with Office 365 cannot justify the drastically higher price. If the device for which you need Office is still usable for a year or more, you are much better off with the hardware-bound version.
